A conversation years in the making: music, jeans, moccasins, and Manchester. We sat down with guitar maestro Johnny Marr to talk about the styles that move him, the culture that shaped him, and why timeless style is all in the details.

From shaping the sound of a generation with The Smiths to carving out a singular solo career, Johnny Marr’s influence stretches far beyond music.
A lifelong advocate for authenticity, craft, and originality — in music, fashion, and everything in between — Johnny embodies many of the values we hold close here at Rivet & Hide.
As a Manchester native, his connection to the city runs deep. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his love boundless. Whether he’s talking about football, nightclubs, or even the local independent retail scene, Johnny’s passion for culture in all its forms is infectious.
He’s been a longtime friend of both our London and Manchester stores. Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to share countless conversations around music, art, and, of course, selvedge denim.
This conversation comes off the back of those shared moments. We were delighted to have the chance to sit down properly and talk about the evolution of Manchester’s myriad subcultures, the common ground gained from a mutual love of well-made things, Johnny’s very first pair of moccasins, and the very real challenges of looking cool when playing guitar as a shorter man.
