Our Jeans Hemming Service
For those looking to get the perfect fit from their new jeans, we offer a complimentary hemming service using original vintage sewing machines.
How do we hem our jeans?
Both of our London and Manchester stores are equipped with traditional vintage sewing machines. Two Union Special 43200gs to be exact. These rare Union Special hemming machines date back to the early ‘50s. They’re not only in perfect working condition, but are able to match the intricate chain stitching found on many of the selvedge denim brands we carry.
Why use a Union Special machine for hemming selvedge denim?
Our Union Special hemming machines work at a 45° angle, pushing and pulling through the denim fabric to create the chain stitch. A subtle puckering of the fabric creates the unique and much-prized ‘roping’ effect at the hem of the jean. It’s a classic detail that simply cannot be achieved without the use of a Union Special sewing machine.
For many, this roping effect is an essential detail for those in search of traditional denim construction. Using a Union Special allows us to provide an expert denim hemming service that honours the authenticity of the original chain stitch.
What do I need to know before hemming selvedge denim?
Firstly, we can hem your jeans to any length. Simply take a look at our measurement guide to confirm the right length for your jeans.
A shorter hem provides a cleaner look with no break. It’s a great look for slimmer jeans. A longer hem allows you to either cuff or stack your denim, granting more flexibility in the style that you wear your jeans.
Keep in mind that unsanforized jeans will shrink after their initial soak or wash. They will lose 1.5 to 3 inches (that’s around 10%) in length.
The exact amount of shrinkage depends on the denim brand. Sanforized jeans will shrink much less.
If you’re unsure, speak to our team to confirm whether your pair of jeans are unsanforized before we hem. You can read more about sanforized and unsanforized denim in our ‘Looking After Your Jeans’ guide.
