The art of sashiko dates back to Japan’s Edo period. It’s a traditional form of decorative reinforcement stitching, used to strengthen, repair, and otherwise embellish items of clothing and ceremonial dress. The term “sashiko” translates literally to “little stabs,” giving you some indication of the textured intricacy that sashiko fabrics can achieve.
Pure Blue Japan harnesses this traditional sashiko method to make a unique sweater rich in tactile charm. Here, deep indigo yarns combine with lighter blue yarns to create a raised, knurled fabric with a one-of-a-kind texture that will reveal further depth as it ages. The Indigo will fleck and fade from the outermost portions of the weave, creating striking contrast fades.
The sweater’s raglan-style construction provides an athletic and flattering fit with a touch of natural drape. The loopback knit interior creates a softness that offsets the heft and coarseness of the exterior. Finished with heavy-duty ribbing at the collar, cuffs, and waist, with additional triangular inserts at the underarm for greater comfort and manoeuvrability.
