Questions about Our Store

TELL ME ABOUT RIVET & HIDE

Rivet & Hide is a destination store with locations in London and Manchester. We specialise in rare selvedge denim and work closely with highly skilled artisans from across Japan, the USA and the UK to bring you the very best. We’ve done so for almost 10 years now. So it’s safe to say we know a thing or two on the subject of quality selvedge denim.

Care to know more? Check out our story.

DO YOU ONLY SELL DENIM?

Our selvedge denim is just the tip of the iceberg. We also stock a finely curated range of shirts, t-shirts, jackets, and boots by our iconic denim brands. We also carry handcrafted leather goods and hand-forged jewellery from select suppliers to complement our denim offerings.

DO YOU ONLY SELL RAW DENIM?

We focus mainly on denim in its raw state, but that’s not to say we don’t experiment with the odd piece of washed denim if the quality is there. We search far and wide to bring you a rich selection of quality selvedge denim in any number of weights, weaves and occasional washes.

Ask the Denim Experts

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SANFORIZED & UNSANFORIZED DENIM?

In a nutshell, sanforized denim refers to any denim that has been treated with steam and water to remove the majority of the expected shrinkage. Typically, this makes it easier to size the denim by taking away any of the guesswork.

Unsanforized or ‘loomstate’ denim refers to a denim that has not undergone this process. It’s a lot stiffer from the outset and will require an initial soak to protect the fabric and remove any shrinkage. Typically, unsanforized denim will shrink by up to 10% after its initial soak.

HOW DO I WASH MY JEANS?

When you decide it’s time to wash your jeans, turn them inside out and wash them in lukewarm water. This will keep any indigo loss to a minimum. Hot washing may damage the denim’s cotton fibres, so keep things gentle and use only a small amount of washing powder. Always air dry your jeans, as machine drying is likely to ruin the fit and feel of the denim itself.

WHEN AND HOW SHOULD I WASH MY JEANS?

At Rivet & Hide, we believe that when and how often to wash your jeans are matters of personal preference. Intense contrasts, crazy ‘whiskering’, and creases around stress areas are usually the result of some lengthy washing abstinence. A gentle, more even fade is achieved by washing more regularly. Washing jeans will also extend their life

Ultimately, the choice is yours.  Our suggestion is that you wash them once they start giving off any nasty odours or become unbearably dirty.  It’s also worth noting that washing your jeans occasionally will extend their life. Water strengthens the cotton fibres, so the occasional wash will prevent any unwanted blowouts.

Unsanforized jeans should be soaked or washed before wearing to help them shrink to fit, to protect the fabric, and to allow the creases to form and wear marks develop after the fabric has shrunk. After that, it's a personal choice when you wash them.
